On the 11th of September 1940 Heinkel HE111H-3 of 3/KG1 as damaged by anti-aircraft fire after attacking the West India docks London, then turning for home, it was attacked by fighters as it fled for the coast and eventually force landed in a field near Hildenborough Kent. When the recovery crew arrived, the wings were removed, and it was placed onto a Queen Mary trailer, after making its way through the village of Hildenborough and arriving at the Half Moon public house carpark they then realised that the Heinkel was too large to get through the narrow roads, it stayed there for a few days until it could be dismantled, in the meantime it became a focal point for collecting for the Spitfire Fund.
